Telephone Helpline

Call us for reliable information about cancer, and emotional support. This service is strictly confidential, anonymous and free.

The distress and fear caused by a diagnosis of cancer can be allayed with timely and accurate information and empathetic support. Aware of the unmet need of those diagnosed with cancer or undergoing treatment, CanSupport revived the telephone help line last year. The increasing use of telephones and mobile/cellular phones across all classes of people makes this an effective way to provide a listening ear, information and confidential counseling. It is of particular help to those who have no means of accessing information and support from elsewhere. Among other things, the help line provides information about cancer and its treatment and about the diagnostic and treatment facilities available in Delhi and in other parts of the country. Its primary purpose is to help patients and their families at a critical and confusing time.

At present, the help line functions from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, Monday to Friday. The calls received range from simple pleas for emotional support to urgent requests for factual information regarding blood banks, hospitals and doctors, financial aid, travel concessions and prosthetic limbs. Sensitive psychological and emotional support to the callers allows them to weather the trauma of cancer and move from denial to acceptance so that they are more willing to undergo the treatment they require.

To ensure that the service continues uninterrupted, we have planned for ongoing recruitment and training of volunteers. As the volume of calls increases, we intend to provide the service five days a week instead of the present three days a week.
