Jheeni Chadariya - A Performance by Shubha Mudgal in aid of CanSupport
Saturday, August 28, 2010 at the Chinmaya Mission Auditorium, New Delhi

On August 28, 2010, CanSupport organized ‘Jheeni Chadariya’, an evening of Hindustani classical music with Shubha Mudgal, at the Chinmaya Mission Auditorium in Delhi. Shubha was ably accompanied by two talented musicians, Aneesh Pradhan on the tabla and Sudhir Nayak on the harmonium.

‘Jheeni Chadariya’ is based on the verses of Kabir which have been set to music by Shubha Mudgal. This was the first time that she sang these compositions in her own inimitable style. Needless to say, she enthralled the audience with the deft manipulation of her deep and resonant voice and with the emotion with which she sang. The music concert was memorable not only because it displayed so vividly the versatility and skill of an extremely talented artiste, but also because it touched a heartfelt chord with its spiritual overtones. The music involved the audience and left them asking for more.

Screened on the occasion was a short film on CanSupport’s programmes of which the home care programme is the centre-piece. It has brought hope, succor and support to thousands of people affected by cancer. In her opening remarks, Harmala Gupta, Founder-President of CanSupport and a cancer survivor herself, stressed the fact that palliative care is shared care as it involves collaboration between a team of professionals and members of the family as well as other care providers. She thanked the audience and Shubha and her team of musicians (who performed pro bono) as well as the sponsors of the concert for sharing this care through their donations made in money and kind.

The event was attended by 400 enthusiastic music lovers and generous and committed friends of CanSupport. Among them were Shri. Dinesh Trivedi, Ministry of State for Health and Family Welfare, Smt. Sindushree Khullar, Secretary, Ministry of Sports, and ambassadors from Spain, Ireland, Italy and Venezuela.

An amount of approximately Rs. 3.6 lac was raised from the event. This will be used to bolster CanSupport’s home care programme which now has 11 home care teams providing 600 cancer patients and their families with medical comfort, nursing care and emotional support in their homes. As all CanSupport’s services are provided free of charge, every donation and sponsorship is vital for the continued survival and growth of our programmes.

The Main Sponsors of the Event were:
Milestone Engineering Pvt Ltd. & SRF Ltd

Other Sponsors were:
HDFC Bank
Mail Today (media partners)
Indo British Garments (print partners)
Kingfisher Airlines (travel partners)
The gifts for the artists were sponsored by Fabindia

HARMALA GUPTA
PARTICIPATES AS A GLOBAL LEADER IN THE
LIVESTRONG GLOBAL SUMMIT FOR CANCER AUGUST 24-26, 2009 DUBLIN, IRELAND

The LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit , was an effort of the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF), founded by Lance Armstrong, a cancer survivor and champion cyclist. The Summit was the first event ever to bring together world leaders, advocates and corporations from more than 60 countries to address the global challenge of cancer The three-day event was a platform for participants to share their unique experiences, stories and commitments to the fight against cancer so as to create a sustained movement that changes the course of cancer in history.

Harmala Gupta made a commitment on behalf of CanSupport at this summit. To quote her, “The goal of my commitment is to sensitize and change public attitudes towards cancer so that the provision of services for cancer becomes a priority in India. I am proposing the creation of a ‘Friends for Life’ network. Starting from a small group of highly motivated individuals, ‘Friends for Life’ will reach out, from one person to the next, to build a huge groundswell of support for the cause. In this way we shall ensure, as Lance and countless others have done through personal example, that with the appropriate care and support cancer can become a spur to greater personal growth and achievement in India too.”

Harmala Gupta was a panelist for the session titled, “Achieving Leadership in the Cancer Community to Create Change.”
