Harmala Gupta, Founder-President of CanSupport, is also Founder-President of Cancer Care India (CACI), an umbrella organization for cancer support groups in India. She is also on the executive committee of the Indian Association of Palliative Care (IAPC).
Harmala has been given the following fellowships and awards in recognition of her contribution to the cause of cancer:
- Times Fellowship by the Times of India Group for the study of `Alternative Therapies and Cancer', 1995.
- `Inner Flame Award' by Full Circle Publications, a unit of Hind Publications in 1999.
- The first distinguished alumna award instituted by Lady Shri Ram College for Women, New Delhi, in March 2000.
- UICC (International Union Against Cancer) Fellowship to visit Singapore to study day care and home care in February 2002.
- Award for Outstanding Contribution to Social Welfare, instituted by the PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry and given by the President of India, in December 2005.
- Outstanding Woman Social Worker of the Year Award for 2005 conferred by the FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO).
- Certificate of Achievement for Dedication and Commitment to the Global Cancer Control Mission, conferred by the UICC and the American Cancer Society, 2007.
- ‘Karmaveer Puraskar’, a national award for Social Justice & Citizen Action, instituted by the Indian Confederation of NGOs (iCONGO), in November 2008.
Individual members of the CanSupport home care team, too, have been recognized and rewarded for excellence:
- In March 2005, Sr. Leonarda Lakra, was ‘highly commended’ by Macmillan Cancer Relief and the International Journal of Palliative Nursing as Palliative Care Nurse of the Year. She received the Award at a glittering ceremony in the U.K.
- In October 2007, Dr. D.P. Singh was awarded a scholarship by the Soros Foundation to attend a week long ‘Open Society Institute Seminar on Paediatric Palliative Care’ held at Salzberg, Austria.
- In November 2008, Dr. Ravinder Mohan received a bursary to attend the ‘Multiprofessional Course in Palliative Care’ held at St. Christopher’s Hospice, UK.
