A friend brought me along to CanSupport’s walkathon where I also got to know all about the services it provides. I decided to volunteer and help out with the program.
Six years later, I am still here.
I have spare time on Mondays when I have no classes. I come to the Children’s Day Care. When I ‘act out’ stories for them, it is pure joy to see their eyes light up in amazement. Just the thought of returning next Monday carries me through the week.
As a volunteer parent facilitator, I appreciate the opportunity to reach out to other parents who are experiencing the greatest possible pain of seeing their child with cancer, lend them an understanding ear, share my story, and offer hope that they will get through and be able to one day live productively, and feel joy again.
CanSupport is supported by over 300 volunteers who commit time and energy to the services it provides. In fact we often say with all our heart that CanSupport would not be able to run without its dedicated volunteers!
We have an amazing mix of volunteers from 10 to 90 years old; from those who come for a few days to learn new skills to volunteers who have been with us for over 15 years. This diversity is something we really value as each person brings something different to their roles.
CanSupport offers meaningful and relevant volunteering opportunities at different levels. Volunteers say CanSupport provides them with fulfilling and enriching experiences, which add to their career, personal growth and self-satisfaction.
There are many reasons why people volunteer. For some it’s to gain new skills or experiences and for some to give back. What’s similar for all volunteers is the desire to support our work. Volunteering is a great way to
- Develop skills such as communication and event organization along with a positive attitude.
- Meet new people, build self-confidence and feel valued..
- Enjoy the happiness of making a difference to society.
- Add positive work references and build your CV.
