Home
is where most people want to be, surrounded by their
near and dear ones, when their disease is no longer
curable and the end of life approaches. The CanSupport
home care teams make this possible by visiting and
caring for patients in their own homes and providing
much needed back-up to the families. In keeping with
the focus of palliative care, the objective is to
place people with cancer and their families at the
centre of care and treat them in a holistic manner,
catering to all their needs. The multi-disciplinary
nature of each team makes it possible to address all
the aspects of pain that define human existence–
physical, emotional and spiritual. As the majority
of our patients have limited financial means, providing
medicines, nutritional supplements, specialised equipment,
and on occasion, food rations also meets a real need.
The
specialised expertise of the team in palliative care
offers the patient relief from pain and other distressing
symptoms along with appropriate nursing care and advice.
Family members are trained in simple nursing tasks
so that they can keep the patient comfortable until
the team’s next visit. These home visits also
provide an opportunity to the patients and members
of their families to express their feelings, to ask
questions and to prepare for what lies ahead. Those
who are particularly anxious or in need of extra emotional
support are helped by our trained counsellors to cope
with their psychological pain. Discussion with the
team allows the family to make informed and appropriate
choices as the disease progresses and the end draws
near. This support continues even after the patient
dies, in the form of bereavement support for the family. |
