On Mondays, our volunteers transport
15-20 children who are under treatment for cancer,
along with their parents, from the Institute Rotary
Cancer Hospital (IRCH) at AIIMS. The young ones
play, listen to stories or songs and enjoy their
drawing and craft activities under the guidance
of talented volunteers. Some of the drawings of
these children have been made into cards and are
now available for sale. All proceeds go towards
funding our services.
During the children’s day care session,
parents are taken aside and given a chance to express
their feelings and concerns in a supportive group setting.
Our volunteers facilitate this process, in which parents
share with each other the stress and trauma of everyday
care giving, the difficulties they face in shouldering
the financial burden of treatment and the different coping
mechanisms they have developed over time.
The children and their parents are also
served delicious snacks, which are usually donated, after
which they are left free to play or relax. The little
gifts that we present to them make it easier to go back
to the hospital. On the whole it’s a happy and relaxing
outing for the children and their parents, away from the
crowded and depressing hospital environment.
On the first Wednesday of every month,
cancer patients and cancer survivors ‘drop-in’
for an interactive session in which experiences and feelings
are shared and mutual support given. Everyone feels energised
by these interactions and leaves the meeting feeling happier
and more cheerful.
