Day Care

This program was started in October, 2002 in a new building in Sector XII R.K.Puram, New Delhi given to us by the JJ & Slum Department of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Home care patients who are well enough to travel are brought to our day care centre on Fridays, usually accompanied by one or two family members. They are picked up from their homes in our van under the supervision of one of our nurses. Out-of- town patients and their care givers who live in a Dharamshala are also picked up by volunteers. At the day care centre, volunteers spend time with the patients, sharing their pains and joys, talking and laughing. They are offered a relaxing foot or hand massage, aromatherapy or other alternative healing, and a nutritious home-cooked meal. It is an enjoyable interlude for the patients and their care givers, who look forward to a break from their daily stresses. After an enjoyable day out they go back home feeling relaxed and cared for.

On Mondays, our volunteers transport 15-20 children who are under treatment for cancer, along with their parents, from the Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital (IRCH) at AIIMS. The young ones play, listen to stories or songs and enjoy their drawing and craft activities under the guidance of talented volunteers. Some of the drawings of these children have been made into cards and are now available for sale. All proceeds go towards funding our services.

During the children’s day care session, parents are taken aside and given a chance to express their feelings and concerns in a supportive group setting. Our volunteers facilitate this process, in which parents share with each other the stress and trauma of everyday care giving, the difficulties they face in shouldering the financial burden of treatment and the different coping mechanisms they have developed over time.

The children and their parents are also served delicious snacks, which are usually donated, after which they are left free to play or relax. The little gifts that we present to them make it easier to go back to the hospital. On the whole it’s a happy and relaxing outing for the children and their parents, away from the crowded and depressing hospital environment.

On the first Wednesday of every month, cancer patients and cancer survivors ‘drop-in’ for an interactive session in which experiences and feelings are shared and mutual support given. Everyone feels energised by these interactions and leaves the meeting feeling happier and more cheerful.
